<div>‘Britain and America,’ wrote George Bernard Shaw, ‘are two countries divided by a common language.’ That witty comment summarises the problems and complexities of English. It has ended up as a world language, the widely used language of commerce and the internet.<br><br>But today’s widespread adoption and use of English is a complex story. Grammatically it’s hard to learn, it has many variants and comes with its own history. Its global distribution is largely due to its imposition through British colonial expansion, where it became the language of authority, control and oppression. Those malign beginnings still carry resentments around the world, and continue to pose questions. Is it arrogant to expect other countries to learn it while Anglophones don’t bother to learn their languages? Or is it a good thing that we’ve found common ground in a multicultural world?<br><br>The idea of English as a global language is controversial, particularly for people in non-English-speaking countries. This learning pathway examines that controversial nature as well as its cultural and economic importance. Using text, video and audio it explores what English means to those who use it and what it means to learn English, both as a mother tongue and an additional language.</div> |

<div><div>This course introduces students to a diverse array of theoretical and empirical issues related to the study of human emotion. Some questions the course will address include: What are our emotions? What purpose do they serve? How do emotions relate to our thoughts, memories, and behaviors towards others? What happens when our emotional responses go awry? Although these questions date back to early philosophical texts, only recently have experimental psychologists begun to explore this vast and exciting domain of study. The course will begin by discussing the evolutionary origins of distinct emotions such as love, anger, fear, and disgust. We will ask how emotions might color our cognitive processes such as thinking and memory, the relationship between emotions and the brain, development of emotions in childhood, and how emotions shape our social relationships. We will also consider how these methods can be applied to studying mental illness in both children and adults. We conclude by studying the pursuit of happiness and well-being, trying to understand what makes us happy.</div><div>This course is part of a broader educational mission to share the study of human emotion beyond the boundaries of the classroom in order to reach students and teachers alike, both locally and globally, through the use of technology. </div><div>This mission is generously supported by, and in collaboration with, the Yale Office of Digital Dissemination and the Yale College Dean's Office. This series was recorded and produced by Douglas Forbush, Lucas Swineford, and the Yale Broadcasting and Media Center.</div></div> |

<div><div><div>Upon hearing that they will have to read another book students usually roll their eyes and moan in disagreement. So to make the reading process more fun for them we let them chose their own book and their own creative assignment.</div><div>There are three parts to the book report:</div><ul><li>A summary and personal opinion</li><li>B character analysis,</li><li>C creative assignment.</li></ul><div>Parts A and B are the same for everyone and resemble “traditional” book report assignments. To rev up our students enthusiasm we have collected a list of 23 creative assignments to include in their book reports for part C.</div><div>In this course you can see the list of assignments. For each assignments I’ve added suggestions of apps that will help the students. The assignments don’t have to be made digitally but most of them easily can be and will make the execution of their book reports more fun.</div><div>For each of the assignments students will need to make sure that their piece of work shows that:</div><ul><li>They have read the book</li><li>Thought deeply & reflected on the book</li><li>Have understood the assignment</li></ul><div>For more information on the iPad Enabled Book report check out my 3 minute presentation on this subject. </div></div><div><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGEtgt5SFgo" target="_blank" data-mce-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGEtgt5SFgo">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGEtgt5SFgo</a></div></div> |
