This book is an expression of Dr. Kenji Takada’s interest in the “big picture” of orthodontics during his distinguished career at Osaka University as a faculty member, orthodontic department chairman and dean of the School of Dentistry. It covers all aspects of orthodontics, but it differs from most texts in its effort to integrate neurophysiology and mathematical modeling into a better understanding of the etiology of malocclusion and jaw function and in the incorporation of both neurophysiology and modeling into diagnostic procedures. I first met Kenji in 1982 while he was spending a post-doctoral year in Alan Lowe’s laboratory at the University of British Columbia, and he became a friend with whom I have stayed in touch through the years. In his early years as a faculty member at Osaka, he was already working out some of the mechanisms by which TM joint problems are related to jaw function and dental occlusion. He remained focused for most his career on obtaining a better understanding of adaptations to malocclusion and how this affected orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This book offers a unique summary, taken both from Kenji’s work and from other published data, of the current understanding of the neurophysiology of jaw function and its relationship to orthodontic problems. For example, in addition to describing facial proportions and how to evaluate them in the context of orthodontic treatment, it includes findings from neuroscience about neural recognition of human faces and a discussion of the neural basis for multiple versions of facial beauty. A mathematical model of a non-linear description of diagnostic elements is incorporated into the diagnostic scheme that can simulate expert decisions. The book also includes information about biomechanical modeling of orthodontic tooth movement that goes beyond classic finite element analysis, which has not been successful in predicting the outcome of various force systems against the teeth, and offers a bio-mathematical kinetic model that has the potential to reach that goal. A similar approach is taken in the development of an optimized model that predicts whether non-extraction orthodontic treatment or extractions would be the best option. In short, Elements of Orthodontics is a step beyond existing orthodontic textbooks. There are many new things for orthodontic residents and practitioners to consider and evaluate, on their way to a better understanding of the intellectual foundation of our specialty. From Preface by William R. Proffit, DDS, PhD; Kenan Distinguished Professor, Orthodontics, University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, Chapel Hill, North Carolina |

From the author of the iTunes bestseller “The Yellow Cab of the Universe – The Solar System,” Mr. Albert’s Brain, is a revolutionary Physics textbook designed expressly for iBooks. If physics doesn’t completely blow your mind, you must not be looking at it correctly. The Yellow Cab can take you where no Physics book has gone before — into the mind of a brilliant (though slightly eccentric) scientist who can show you how this world we live in really works! The pages of the book unfold themselves to hundreds of other interactive pages, combining stunning artwork with original animation, video, 3D models that will radically redefine for you how a physics book should look and feel. Mr. Albert will take you on a journey through Motion, Force, Gravity, Heat, Waves, Electricity, Magnetism and lots more. As interesting as it is for adult readers, it is specifically designed to be used as a textbook by high school students (and as a presentation tool for teachers) – especially those who have found science in general and all kinds of textbooks, both paper and digital, lifeless and boring. Mr. Albert’s Brain will grab you with the stickiness of a video game, explaining basic concepts and key facts while taking you on an amazing journey, all the while reinforcing what you have previously learned in the interactive modules. There has never been a Physics book like Mr. Albert’s Brain, and the best way to see what we are talking about is to download the book (or book sample) to experience it for yourself! You will not be disappointed. |

To a large extent, the mechanical image reproduction has made the History of Art books possible and has been modeled as an iconic/literary discipline, whose discourse is presented to reader through the illustrations. This work highlights the potential for teaching offered by new technologies for adapting visual narration procedures to an interactive discourse, with unpublished three-dimensional reconstructions, unique combinations of planimetry and elevations, and an extensive range of activities for immersion in reading the architectural language as formal vocabulary and for designing meaningful spaces. Greek architecture has provided the vocabulary of the orders, syntactic and semantic criteria about nature and the value of architecture, and the idea of an ordered space as the setting for social functions, which the reader will discover in a surprising way in this new generation of History of Art books for the new media in the digital culture. |
